Electrofishing is a common and effective non-lethal technique to sampling freshwater fish, and it’s a particularly effective method for capturing moderate to large-size fish. Electrofishing can be used in a variety of applications, including the assessment of fish community structure (species composition and abundance), absence/presence determination, inventory studies, targeted assessments for particular species, and aquatic salvage (fish rescue).

Basin routinely provides electrofishing services for our clients to assist with various types on in-water works including culvert and bridge replacements, pipeline crossings and exposed pipes, outfall and intake construction, channel realignments, bank stabilization and flood mitigations, borrow pit reclamation, boat launches, and weirs, to name a few. Electrofishing can also be an effective means of conducting fish capture and release programs for construction projects.

Basin conducts electrofishing in a variety of aquatic habitats, including streams and rivers, large reservoirs as well as small lakes and ponds. The most common methods include boat electrofishing (suitable for larger streams, rivers and lakes) and backpack electrofishing (suitable for smaller systems and other waterbodies that are not accessible by boat).

Our electrofishing experience covers numerous pipeline and road crossing projects (pre-construction assessments and fish rescues during construction), intakes and outfalls, non-compliance projects, bank stabilization/flood mitigation projects, weir rehabilitations, emergency in-water works, fish salvage on various boat launches (Moose Lake, Long Lake, McLeod Lake, Steele Lake and Gull Lake), and pipeline and hazardous waste spills.
